START A CHAPTER: SPECIAL TERMS AND DEFINITIONS Criteria | Pre-Approved Charities | Definitions | Application | Policies | Questions Chapter: A Chapter is a group recognized by the Home Office as meeting all the criteria for Chapter formation. Chapters differ from Nascents in that they have three or more Gyes. For more about these requirements, please see the Chapter Criteria. Chosen Charity: Each Nascent or Chapter must tie its own membership to membership in a chosen Pagan charity. To qualify as a such a charity, this organization must be nonprofit, must use the word "Pagan" or similar term when describing itself in public, must maintain a determination as a tax-exempt organization according to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service or similar national-level agency if outside the United States; and must maintain a dues-paying membership, subscriber, or individual sponsor program that requires regular donations. For more about how to identify a chosen charity please see the Chapter Criteria. Expedition. All Earthwise Gyre activities fall into two categories: open events, which are open to individuals other than members, and expeditions, which are for "members only." All Nascents and Chapters must host at least one expedition each calendar year. Gye: This is a very old term that means to lead or govern. In the convention of Earthwise Gyre, all Chapter leaders are called Gyes. For example, Gye Thomas, Gye Evans, and Gye Van Pelt lead the Washington, DC Chapter. Nascent: This term describes a group that would otherwise qualify as a Chapter but for the fact that the group has yet to identify three or more Gyes. It also refers to the individual(s) who lead a Nascent group, for example: Nascent Jones. Pre-Approved Pagan Charities. A pre-approved Pagan Charity is an organization that has already been determined as meeting all the Earthwise Gyre criteria for status as a chosen charity, and an organization that has granted the Home Office its permission to be considered as a local Chapter's chosen charity.
