START A CHAPTER: MISSION STATEMENT AND POLICIES
Criteria | Pre-Approved Charities | Definitions | Application | Policies | Questions

ONE: All Chapters and Nascents are required to uphold the Earthwise Gyre mission as well as these policies, to use Earthwise Gyre resources when communicating online, to tie their own membership to membership in a chosen Pagan charity, and host at least one “member only” expedition each calendar year. Recognized Chapters must also identify and maintain three Chapter Gyes.

TWO: It is understood that the stated mission of Earthwise Gyre is to celebrate earth spirituality, foster the safe, competent, and responsible enjoyment of the great outdoors; and create opportunities for learning, exploration, and reconnection both with ourselves and our natural world through guided discovery and expedition.

THREE: All Chapters and Nascents must maintain a chosen Pagan charity. This charity must: 1) use the term "Pagan" or a similar phrase commonly associated with Paganism when describing itself in public; 2) be a federally recognized 501(c)(3) organization or a similarly recognized organization if based outside the United States, and 3) maintain a subscriber, member, or individual donor program involving regular monetary donations.

FOUR: No Chapter or Nascent may be established in a region already settled by an existing Chapter. The only exceptions to this policy are those instances when a Nascent was there first and the recognized Chapter came later; or a region is made newly available by the revocation of an existing Chapter’s charter. Chapter charters are granted or revoked at the discretion of the Home Office.

FIVE: Chapters are named according to the city or town from which they operate. A Chapter’s actual region is calculated by going to MapQuest or similar online navigation aid and identifying all the territory that falls within a 20 mile driving radius of that city/town’s city hall. Any ancillary cities that have a town hall within that territory are ineligible to form their own Chapter. Regions are ranked according to the date settled.

SIX: Each Chapter and Nascent must maintain at least one group leader (Gye or Nascent respectively) who lives within 20 miles of that Chapter or Nascent’s designated home town or city.

SEVEN: No Chapter or Nascent will charge membership dues; or impose fees that may resemble membership dues. However, Chapter’s and Nascents may at their discretion raise funds to cover specific event costs, raise funds in support of other charitable organizations, or raise funds to purchase memberships in their chosen Pagan charity for others.

EIGHT: Unless otherwise specified in these policies, all Nascents and Chapters are given the broadest discretion possible in deciding how to best organize their group, select leaders, plan events, and otherwise conduct their affairs.
